Article Outline

It has been nearly 175 years since Thomas Hodgkin presented his paper “On some Morbid Appearances of the Absorbent Glands and Spleen” to the Medical-Chirurgical Society.1 In that seminal discussion, autopsy results of seven patients were discussed: a peculiar enlargement of the lymphatics was described in each case. In the time since, treatment of Hodgkin’s Disease has occupied a singular position at the forefront of cancer therapy. The roles of surgical staging,2 curative radiotherapy,3 chemotherapy,4 and of toxicity reduction to decrease late effects for cancer survivors5 have all had some aspect of their genesis in Hodgkin’s Disease.

Doctors Tsang, Hodgson, and Crump have provided us with a sterling synopsis on current thought in Hodgkin’s Disease. It is of immediate use as a concise review of the topic, but should also serve as a valuable reference of the varied presentations and therapies of this unique malignancy.
